Adopt-A-Block

A resident-driven effort to keep our streets clean through regular community clean-ups and ongoing neighborhood care.

We need YOU!

We host community clean-ups on the third Saturday of most months. Meeting times and locations are shared on the Community Calendar. Learn more and join us.

Whether you join once a month or take ownership of your block, your participation helps shape the future of Historic Anacostia.

HABA provides the gloves, bags, and pickers.

Observation to Solution

Trash and illegal dumping remain ongoing challenges for many urban communities, ranging from casually tossed single-use bottles and wrappers to post-election campaign remnants such as signs attached to utility poles, trees, and staked in the ground.

If not collected, this debris creates a "broken window" effect that can encourage further littering.

It eventually blows into residents' yards and washes into our sewer system and the neighboring Anacostia River, posing a direct threat to our local environment and the health of our watershed.

To complement already established city services and create a new opportunity for residents to connect, HABA has entered into a formal partnership through the District Department of Public Works (DPW) Office of the Clean City.

Through this official Adopt-a-Block commitment, HABA has formally adopted several streets bordered by:

  • Marion Barry Avenue SE

  • 14th Street SE

  • 16th Street SE

  • W Street SE

While these define our core commitment, our impact often extends beyond these boundaries during community clean-up events—especially when more neighbors join in!
