Pet Waste Bag Station Network

A cleaner, more walkable neighborhood through shared responsibility

The Clean Paths Initiative is a network of 16 pet waste stations strategically installed throughout the neighborhood to promote responsible pet ownership, reduce waste, and protect our local environment while ensuring our streets remain clean and step-friendly for everyone.

A Resident-Led Model

While the infrastructure was funded by Redbrick LMD—the developer behind the nearby Bridge District—the long-term success of this program relies on the community. Historic Anacostia residents have taken the lead on the ongoing maintenance and restocking of the stations, ensuring this remains a sustainable, neighbor-to-neighbor project.

Adopt a Station

Are you a resident looking to make a direct impact on your block? We are looking for local volunteers to help maintain and restock individual stations. If you are willing to Adopt a Station near your home, please email us at historicanacostia@gmail.com.

Observation to Solution

For an extended period, neighbors in Historic Anacostia observed a troubling trend:

Uncollected pet waste was becoming commonplace.

Beyond being unsightly, this issue it became a pressing sanitation and environmental threat.

Left untreated, waste washes into our storm drains, carrying harmful bacteria directly into the Anacostia River and impacting the health of our local ecosystem.

The Clean Paths Initiative was conceptualized and launched by HABA as a direct response to our neighborhood's needs. To ensure the solution was truly community-driven, HABA conducted a resident poll to identify the most effective proposed locations for infrastructure.

By taking the lead, HABA secured the necessary partnerships with Redbrick LMD and the District’s Department of Transportation to turn this vision into a reality:

  • Data-Driven Placement: Based on resident feedback, we have installed 16 premium pet waste bag stations at the most high-traffic, strategically identified locations. These provide free, convenient access to bags, ensuring our walkways remain inviting and "step-safe" for everyone.

  • A Sustainable Stewardship Model: These stations follow a resident-led model. Local volunteers take pride in the ongoing maintenance and restocking of each unit, ensuring the program is reliable, well-kept, and rooted in community care.

  • Building a Connected Corridor: By aligning these stations with our Adopt-a-Block efforts, we are creating a seamless environment of cleanliness that protects our local ecosystem and supports the long-term vitality of Historic Anacostia.
