Who we are

Since 2006, HABA has served as a vital link for the Historic Anacostia community.

Our mission is simple:

Build a stronger neighborhood by connecting neighbors, representing local interests to city leadership, and advocating for the voices that define our historic streets.

Whether you are a long-time resident or a new business, HABA is here to support your growth and protect our shared heritage.

Anacostia | Darius Hill

    • Building Community - Cultivate a strong sense of belonging and connection among neighbors through volunteer opportunities, social events, and outreach.

    • Neighborhood Vitality - Lead initiatives to enhance the beauty, cleanliness, and overall safety of our neighborhood.

    • Strategic Partnerships - Complement, support, and partner with local organizations dedicated to supporting the Historic Anacostia District.

    • Civic Advocacy - Create space for meaningful dialogue on the critical topics impacting residents.

    • Community Resource - Serve as a central hub of information, keeping our neighbors informed and empowered.

    • Preserving Heritage - Celebrate and highlight the unique, cultural, architectural, and natural amenities that define our historic district.

  • HABA is led by a volunteer board of five residents. Each board member serves a two-year term, ensuring stable and committed representation for our neighborhood.

    Board of Directors (2025-2027)

    • Jared Powell, President

    • Patrick O’Keefe, Vice President & Secretary

    • Traci Johnson, Community Outreach

    • Jaime Hagelstein, Treasurer

While our board provides oversight, the heart of HABA is our residents. Our work is further amplified by permanent and ad-hoc committees, which are powered by the energy and expertise of our volunteer resident members.

  • For Neighbors: The Best Way is to Show Up
HABA thrives when our community is active and engaged. Whether you have five minutes or five hours, the best way to support Historic Anacostia is simply to show up. We host a diverse range of activities throughout the year to ensure there is a place for everyone to get involved:

    • Monthly Litter Clean-Ups: Help us keep our historic streets beautiful and pristine.

    • Advocacy in Action: Represent our neighborhood by testifying at the DC Council on the issues that matter most.

    • Social Events: Connect with your neighbors at our fun community gatherings and seasonal celebrations.

    • Candidate Forums: Get informed and have your voice heard. We host forums and meet ups to give you direct access to the people running for office, ensuring our community’s priorities are front and center.

    Lead the Way
Are you looking to make a deeper impact? We are always seeking passionate individuals to spearhead special projects or lead subcommittees. If you have a specific expertise or a vision for a new initiative, we want to provide the platform to help you bring it to life.
