Neighborhood Profile
HISTORIC ANACOSTIA BOUNDARIES
Historic Anacostia is a vibrant neighborhood located just east of the Anacostia River, that offers residents a close-knit community feel anchored by landmarks like the Frederick Douglass National Historic Site and a growing scene of local businesses. It is remarkably close to the city's core, situated just three miles from the National Mall and less than a ten-minute Metro ride from major downtown hubs.
Deeply rooted in local history, the Anacostia Historic District was locally designated in 1973, making it one of the first neighborhoods in Washington, D.C. to receive such recognition. It was later added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978 to preserve its unique architectural character as the city’s first true suburb
This legacy of community strength continues today through a robust network of essential services. Residents benefit from evolving educational institutions, reliable transit, and expanding public safety and healthcare facilities—many of which are highlighted in the amenities listed below.
